Come to the Cottage: Your Perfect Winter Weekend for Two

There’s summer-in-Muskoka energy, and then there’s winter-in-Muskoka energy.

Snow falling outside. A fire going inside. Frozen lakes, quiet forests, outdoor saunas, incredible food and absolutely no pressure to do too much of anything.

If you’ve been dreaming about your own cozy cottage escape, consider this your sign to come to the cottage and spend a winter weekend for two in Muskoka.

And yes, if Muskoka has been on your radar thanks to Heated Rivalry, this is your chance to experience the real thing.

Friday: Check In and Cozy Up

First things first: find somewhere you’ll actually want to stay.

Winter is when Muskoka’s cottages, cabins, lodges and resorts really shine. Think wood-burning fireplaces, lake views, outdoor hot tubs, private cabins and snowy forests right outside your door.

For classic Muskoka lodge vibes, check into Cedar Grove Lodge, where private lakeside cottages and wood-burning fireplaces make it pretty easy to settle into winter mode.

Want the full resort experience? Make a weekend of it at Deerhurst Resort, JW Marriott The Rosseau Muskoka Resort & Spa, Sherwood Inn, Hidden Valley Resort or Trillium Resort & Spa.

For something even more private, book your own winter cottage through Jayne’s Luxury Rentals and make the weekend entirely your own.

You can also browse all of Muskoka’s winter resorts and places to stay and find the vibe that fits.

The only Friday-night rule? Don’t over-plan it.

Check in, pour something good, light the fire and settle into cottage mode.

Saturday Morning: Coffee First

A proper winter weekend needs a great coffee stop.

If you’re heading through Bracebridge, grab a latte at Capsize Coffee, Baristah Coffee or Muskoka favourite Oliver’s Coffee.

In Gravenhurst, make a stop at Blue Willow Tea Shop on the Muskoka Wharf, or save room for something sweet before you hit the road.

Then, it’s time to get outside.

Saturday Morning: Pick Your Winter Adventure

Make your way to Huntsville and Arrowhead Provincial Park, home to one of Muskoka’s most iconic winter experiences.

Its famous Arrowhead Ice Skating Trail winds through the snow-covered forest and feels just about as Canadian as a winter date can get.

Rather stay on two feet? Head to Limberlost Forest & Wildlife Reserve for a winter hike, snowshoe or cross-country ski through its incredible trail network.

For a little more adrenaline, book a dog sledding experience with North Ridge Ranch, hit the slopes at Hidden Valley Highlands Ski Area or book a guided winter adventure with Find Your Wild.

You can also keep things simple with a snowy walk to Lion’s Lookout in Huntsville or explore the trails at the Bracebridge Resource Management Centre.

Or do none of the above.

Sleeping in is also a perfectly acceptable Muskoka winter activity.

Saturday Afternoon: Heat Things Up

After a morning outside, it’s time to warm up.

Book a private sauna session at Floathaus in Gravenhurst. Heat up in the wood-fired floating sauna overlooking Lake Muskoka, cool down with a cold plunge and repeat.

Want to take the wellness part of the weekend even further? Book a treatment at Amba Spa at Deerhurst Resort, spend some time at the spa at JW Marriott The Rosseau, or combine cottage country and craft beer at Muskoka BeerSpa.

If your ideal date involves wine rather than wellness, head to Muskoka Lakes Farm & Winery in Bala.

In winter, the cranberry farm becomes one of the most unique date spots in Ontario. Weather permitting, lace up for the Cranberry Ice Trail, explore the property by snowshoe and warm up fireside afterwards with something cranberry-inspired.

Snow. Skates. Wine. Fire.

Date handled.

Or Make It a Brewery Afternoon

Prefer après over spa?

Muskoka has you covered.

Stop at Canvas Brewing Co. in downtown Huntsville, head to Bracebridge for a pint at Muskoka Brewery, or make your way to Gravenhurst and grab a table at Sawdust City Brewing Co..

You can also head to Baysville for Lake of Bays Brewing Company or pair a visit to Clear Lake Brewing Co. with your Muskoka BeerSpa afternoon.

Grab a couple of cans to take back to the cottage and you’ve got your Saturday night après covered too.

Saturday Night: Dinner for Two

You’ve earned a great dinner.

In Huntsville, Tall Trees Muskoka is tucked into a historic house surrounded by woods and is exactly the kind of place that feels right on a cold winter night.

You can also try 3 Guys and a Stove for a longtime Muskoka favourite or stay right at Deerhurst and make a night of dinner and drinks at the resort.

Around Lake Rosseau, make a reservation at Crossroads Restaurant in Rosseau or head to Muskoka Chophouse at JW Marriott The Rosseau for steak, wine and a full resort date-night atmosphere.

Staying around Gravenhurst? Try Cliffside at Muskoka Bay Resort, The Boathouse Restaurant at Taboo Muskoka, Sawdust City Brewing Co. for something casual, or grab something to bring back to the cottage.

In Bracebridge, The Old Station Restaurant is an easy downtown choice, or stop at Bracebridge Barrelhouse for craft beer and a relaxed dinner.

Then it’s back to the fire, the hot tub or the couch.

We’ll leave the rest of the evening itinerary up to you.

One More Thing Before Bed: Look Up

One of the best parts of a Muskoka winter weekend happens after dark.

Bundle up, step outside and look at the sky.

For the full experience, drive to Torrance Barrens Dark Sky Preserve, one of the best-known stargazing locations in the region.

On a clear winter night, the combination of dark skies, snow and silence is pretty hard to beat.

Then get back to that fireplace.

Sunday: Take It Slow

There is absolutely no need to rush Sunday morning.

Coffee in bed. Breakfast overlooking the snow. Maybe one more hot tub. Definitely one more fire.

Then take the long way home.

Stop in Downtown Huntsville, Downtown Bracebridge or Downtown Gravenhurst for coffee, lunch and a little shopping.

If you’re in Bala, pop into Jack & Stella for its modern spin on the classic Muskoka general store before heading home.

Or squeeze in one final winter adventure.

Go for another skate. Take a short snowshoe. Grab a local beer. Find a bakery. Stop for lunch. Or simply turn around and head back to the cottage.

We support that too.

Make It Your Winter Weekend

The best part about a Muskoka winter getaway is that there really isn’t one way to do it.

For the adventure weekend: skate Arrowhead, ski Hidden Valley, snowshoe Limberlost and try dog sledding at North Ridge Ranch.

For the cozy weekend: book a private cottage, stock the fridge, light the fire and barely leave.

For the foodie weekend: coffee shops, breweries, Muskoka Lakes Farm & Winery and a great dinner for two.

For the wellness weekend: Floathaus, a resort spa, snowy walks and a cottage hot tub.

Or take a little from each.

Your Winter Cottage Era Starts Here

Muskoka gets plenty of attention in summer, but winter might just be its coziest season.

The crowds thin out. The snow piles up. The fires get lit. Frozen lakes and forests become your playground, and suddenly cancelling your plans to spend the afternoon in a cabin feels like exactly the right decision.

Whether Heated Rivalry put Muskoka on your radar or you’ve been dreaming about a snowy cottage escape for years, this is your invitation.

Come to the cottage.

Find your perfect place to stay in Muskoka and start planning your winter weekend for two.
