About

Celebrating 20 Years as a UNESCO Biosphere!

The Georgian Bay Mnidoo Gamii Biosphere was designated in 2004 as a region of global ecological significance, committing to a sustainable and equitable environment. Stretching along eastern Georgian Bay and inland from the French River to the Severn River, the community is inspired to work together to care for both people and the land.

Located within Anishinaabek territory, the Georgian Bay Biosphere acknowledges and respects the First Nations and Indigenous peoples who continue to protect the land, air, and water of Mnidoo-gamii, the Spirit of the Great Lake.

This biosphere encompasses the eastern coast of Georgian Bay and extends approximately 175 kilometers, from the Severn River to the French River. This area of Lake Huron is home to the largest collection of freshwater islands in the world.

As a UNESCO biosphere, the Georgian Bay Biosphere is situated within the Robinson-Huron Treaty of 1850 and the Williams Treaty of 1923, acknowledging its location on Anishinabek territory. We are thankful for our collaborations with First Nation communities and all Indigenous peoples in this region, honoring their ancestors as the original caretakers of the air, land, and water. We actively support the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and strive to build respectful and reciprocal relationships.
