About

The Birthplace of a Hero! Bethune Memorial House National Historic Site of Canada commemorates the life and achievements of Dr. Henry Norman Bethune, a battlefront surgeon, promoter of public health care, inventor, teacher and artist.

The modern exhibit offers an inspiring story of a small-town boy who became the most recognized Canadian in the world. Visitors get a chance to explore his achievements through stories, artifacts, images, videos, artwork and statues. Then, to experience the roots of the hero, you can also explore his actual 1890 birthplace, a home that was a church manse. Restored to reflect the Victorian time period, the house also contains some original family artifacts. For your hands-on experience, try on Victorian clothing or dress as a medic or nurse in the First World War. Then, out on the historic lawn, try out Victorian games and chores.

The First World War trench activity area is also open for children to burn off some extra energy. You will experience great stories, fantastic photo opportunities and fun role-play activities. Typically open from May 16 to Oct 31. Winter tours can be made by reservation. Private guided tours can also be arranged in your language of choice (English, French and Chinese).

From June 19 to September 7, 2026, they will take part in the Canada Strong Program, and all their admission fees will be FREE. Fees for program bookings, such as their popular Private Guided Tour, remain in place.

Fees for 2026 and 2027 will be: $10/Adult (aged 18 to 64), $8.50/Senior (65+), and free admission for youth 17 and under.
