About
Join an expert stargazer at Torrance Barrens Dark Sky Preserve this summer!
During these fun, informative sessions, you’ll build confidence identifying key constellations and visible planets while developing a deeper connection to the cosmos.
You’ll meet your guide at the parking lot and take a short walk to an open area with exposed granite surfaces and other stunning Canadian landscapes. Each tour begins with sharing information about the area, the importance of dark sky sites, and the impacts of light pollution. Then you will learn the basics of how to navigate the night sky, using your own customized sky chart! As it continues to darken around you, more and more stars and constellations will start popping out, and you’ll dive into the stories and mythologies behind them, as well as other fascinating astronomical facts.
You’ll also explore any current and upcoming meteor showers, moon phases, and any other observable highlights; each tour is uniquely tailored to the night sky at that moment!
Tours begin at 9:30 pm, and the star stories and information portion will run for about 1.5 hours, but after that, guests are not only welcome but encouraged to stick around longer, to enjoy more dark sky time, ask questions, or practice finding constellations and continuing to explore the night sky.
Be prepared for a fun, cozy night -dress in layers, bring camping chairs or blankets if you wish, and a red light headlamp if you have one.
While astronomy can feel overwhelming at first, this program breaks down essential concepts in a clear and accessible way, making it enjoyable for everyone! By the end of the experience, you’ll feel inspired to continue exploring the night sky on your own.
Custom tours are available in other Ontario locations, too! Please visit the website www.ontariostargazing.com to inquire about booking!
