About

Gain a deeper understanding of how magical traditions have evolved throughout human history. Beginning with prehistoric shamanic practices and the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, and Rome, this course traces the development of magical thought across cultures and centuries.

You will explore Hermeticism, La Vecchia Religione—the Old Religion—and the folk traditions of Old Europe, followed by the rich magical practices of Celtic Druidism, Eastern European folk magic, and African spiritual traditions. The course examines how regional beliefs, local plants, ancestor veneration, folklore, and ritual practices shaped each system.

The class will also investigate historical beliefs surrounding witchcraft and the persecution of those accused of practising it, including the witches of Kent and the witches of Salem. These cases reveal how fear, religion, politics, superstition, community conflict, and social expectations influenced the treatment of suspected witches in Europe and colonial North America.

Friday, September 11, 2026, from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm.
