This beloved show, and winner of the Governor General’s Literary Award for Drama, pays tribute to Canada’s iconic WW1 hero and flying ace, Billy Bishop, written and composed by John MacLachlan Gray and Eric Peterson. It combines humour and tragedy while reflecting on Canada’s colonial past and national identity, making it a unique and significant piece in Canadian theatre.
The two-man musical features actor Matt John Evans as the legendary Bishop. Evans also portrays an astonishing 15 other characters.
His portrayal of Billy Bishop has received high praise, with one reviewer calling it “the best one I have ever seen” and “my favourite Billy Bishop ever,” describing Evans’ performance as a “tour de force.” Matt has appeared recently in CBC’s Murdoch Mysteries and Fellow Travellers on Paramount+. He has also appeared in Canadian feature films, including Beowulf & Grendel, Black Swan, and The Birder.
Michael Mulrooney, Musical Director and Piano Player
Michael Mulrooney has served as musical director, conductor, pianist, arranger, and/or composer on over 200 theatrical productions. He worked on the development of Livent’s award-winning productions of Kiss of the Spider Woman, Show Boat, and Ragtime. Conducting credits include Starlight Express (Bochum, Germany), Les Misérables (Toronto), Kiss of the Spider Woman, Sunset Boulevard, (Toronto), and Show Boat (Toronto and New York). Since 2001, he has been working as an adjunct professor in the performing arts programs at Sheridan College.
