For thousands of years, stones, minerals, and gemstones have been worn, carried, buried, traded, and placed in sacred spaces as symbols of protection, healing, power, status, luck, and spiritual connection. But where did these meanings come from, and why are certain stones associated with particular purposes?
In this class, you will explore the historical use and symbolism of stones across cultures and magical traditions. You will examine archaeological findings, ancient texts, mythology, religious practices, folklore, lapidaries, medieval medicine, regional customs, and modern crystal traditions to understand how the meanings assigned to stones developed and changed over time.
You will learn which stones have traditionally been associated with protection, prosperity, love, courage, divination, communication, grounding, healing, and spiritual practice—and the historical stories, cultural beliefs, physical characteristics, and symbolic associations behind those meanings.
