Gravenhurst is the birthplace of Norman Bethune, a Canadian doctor who became a revered figure in China and a national hero in Canada. Chinese tourists annually visit the residence of this Canadian icon in Muskoka.

Norman Bethune, an innovative thoracic surgeon, made noteworthy advancements in his field through inventing and improving surgical instruments. His dedication to the well-being of soldiers and civilians during the Sino-Japanese War (between Japan and China) earned him hero status in the People’s Republic of China. Additionally, he played a pioneering role in advocating for universal healthcare in Canada. Currently, around 12,000 tourists visit each year, with approximately 90% of them being Chinese.
