Imagining a good future for our lakes despite climate change
Presenter: Norman Yan PhD FRSC – Friends of the Muskoka Watershed
In his concluding talk in this webinar series, Norman Yan documents the multiple threats to the health of Muskoka lakes, illustrating both how they interact to increase the risk of algal blooms, and how climate change multiplies the threat. He then reminds us that we have solved many past threats to our environment, but only when we generated the knowledge of what to do and the public will to do it. Yan concludes by imagining a healthier future for Muskoka lakes, one in which we reduce the local causes of algal blooms, help to mitigate climate change in part by restoring our forest’s historic ability to capture carbon, and finally, generate the knowledge and infrastructure needed to move from remediating problems we failed to anticipate, to preventing their occurrence. A good start is to collectively imagine then articulate the future we want.
