Throughout history, women have come together and joined their voices to improve the lives of everyone. From the right to vote, equal pay, maternity leave, reproductive rights to domestic violence, women have engaged in peaceful campaigns to raise awareness of issues and to change society. While many great strides have been made, recent movements have shown us that many more strides are still needed.
Though Her Eyes, In Her Hands was initiated by YWCA – Muskoka to develop a greater awareness of the strength, diversity and talent of local women artists and the stories being told through their hands. “It is our desire that women of all ages are encouraged to use their experiences and talents to express their own voice,” says Serena West, one of the organizers of the exhibition. “We hope that we inspire others, of all genders, to use their creative expression as a way to explore ideas, feelings and experiences.”
One of the goals of this exhibition was to gather female artists in Muskoka and encourage collaboration. “We also want to celebrate the joy and freedom that we can now enjoy as women artists,” remarks Serena. “Grateful for those who forged a path for us to follow, we see our opportunity and responsibility to carry the torch and light the way for the coming generations.”
Twenty women are participating in the show. Their work demonstrates the range of their personal experiences as well as differences in artistic styles and media.
“The women in the group look forward to having this show at the Chapel Gallery because it has a long standing history of supporting local artists. A hub of art talks, shows and workshops, it is the ideal place to come together to celebrate women in the arts,” explains Serena. “Many of the women in the show have had other shows at the Chapel Gallery, however, now they are coming together with louder voices, compelling awareness during March, which is Women’s History Month and also marks International Women’s Day on March 8.”
Through Her Eyes, In Her Hands with a public reception on Saturday, February 16 from 1pm until 3pm. There will be a Grand Reception held on Friday, March 8 from 6pm-8pm to celebrate International Women’s Day. The exhibition continues at the Chapel Gallery until March 16.
The Washago Carving Event takes place at the Washago Centennial Park. There will be an auction on the Sunday from 1-3pm and guests will have the opportunity to purchase items all through out the 3 day event.
All proceeds from this event will be going towards a Mobi-Mat which is something that will allow those with mobility restrictions and wheelchairs to access the beach that much easier, it will also make life easier for those parents with strollers and wagons.
We will have food and beverage vendors on site, as well as some local shops with products and inventory at the event available for purchase.

Opry Gold is a vibrant celebration featuring a rich mixture of classic Grand Ole Opry masters and the next generation of breakthrough country artists!
This show highlights all the amazing artists that have played the Opry stage over the years and tells the stories about their connections.
Opry Gold clearly is a labour of love for show creator Leisa Way and her multi-talented band, Bobby Prochaska, Fred Smith, Nathan Smith, Sam Cino and musical arranger Bruce Ley. The fiddle, banjo, drums, keyboard, guitars, bass, harmonica and even the washboard; these artists can play them all! And when they vocalized, the audience is treated to first class harmonies and solos.
Opry Gold takes the audience on a journey back through time to the days, in 1925, when Nashville’s radio station WSM became the first all-country music station featuring early stars like Uncle Jimmy Thompson and Grandpa Jones and then featuring the sounds of Dolly, Kitty and Tammy right through to today’s stars like Shania, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw.
Leisa Way’s Opry Gold brings audiences some of the very best of classic and new wave country music and heapin’ helpin’ of good-natured fun!
