Muskoka holds more than 10,000 years of Indigenous history. Made up of four cultural groups including Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabek, Metis and Haudenosauneefour.
The name Muskoka is believed to originate from the Chippawa Tribe Chief called Mesqua Ukee, which translates to “not easily turned back in the day of battle.” Mesqua Ukee played a significant role in the signing of treaties between the Indigenous People of Canada and the Province of Canada, through which approximately 250,000 acres of land in the region were sold to the Province.
