Bala Cranberry Festival is Rocking Bala Once Again

Always the Third Weekend in October

For more info: www.balacranberryfestival.on.ca

The Bala Cranberry Festival is now entering its unprecedented 31st year of celebrating the staple product of the Muskoka region, and what this festival has accomplished over these three decades has been nothing short of unbelievable. Over the last 30 years, close to 1 million people have come to Bala to take in the annual Cranberry Festival. For a town with an estimated population of 700, that is no small feat! Always the weekend after Thanksgiving, the festival gives tourists another great reason to head to Muskoka and take in the Fall colours.

If you have never heard of this popular festival that celebrates the cranberry harvest, we can understand if you are a bit skeptical. How fun can this little red berry actually be? Well the answer is simple ... a lot!

First off, the cranberry harvest is actually a beautiful site to see. Take in an informative and entertaining marsh tour and witness the bright red cranberries filling the marshes with a backdrop of beautiful Fall colours. It is a spectacular site to see, and you can even put on a pair of waders and head into the marsh to be engulfed by a sea of these little red berries. There are two cranberry marshes you can visit; Muskoka Lakes Winery & Cranberry Marsh, and the Iroquois Cranberry Growers.

Beyond the sheer beauty, there is a ton more fun to be had during this memorable weekend. For the 'foodie' in the bunch, it is a treat to try a number of different cranberry drinks and dishes. Some of the different treats you can expect over the course of the weekend include cranberry crepes, cranberry sausages, cran-maple syrup and cran-apple cider. Your Cranberry Festival Weekend wouldn't be complete without wine from Muskoka Lakes Winery. Some of the award winning fruit wines you can enjoy include Cranberry Wine, Georgian Bay Rose, Cranberry Blueberry Wine, White Cranberry Wine, and the list goes on. Believe me when I say, these are all spectacular!

The fun continues throughout the weekend with interesting vendors, live entertainment, inspired cuisine, photo booth, face painting, balloon twisting, and more! Don't forget the annual Cran-Anne Look-a-Like Contest, where Bala's Museum with Memories of Lucy Maud Montgomery crowns an Anne of Green Gables look-a-like, fitting considering Anne of Green Gable's famous quote 'I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers."

One big component of the festival this year is the live entertainment taking place over the course of the festival. Magicians, DJs and local singer/songwriters will keep crowds entertained throughout the weekend, headlined by a rockin' concert at The Kee on the Saturday night (act to be announced shortly). Situated right on shores of Lake Muskoka, The Kee is an institution in Muskoka, bringing high profile acts to the region for seven decades! Come on out for the 30 year celebration of the cranberry harvest in Muskoka, and experience one of Ontario's truly remarkable events.
